The Equipment Behind the Clean: What We Use at Surface Co and Why It Matters

Josh Martin • Owner & Operator
Not all pressure cleaning equipment is the same. Here is a breakdown of the machines, attachments and methods we use at Surface Co, and why the right setup matters for every surface type.

When most people think about pressure cleaning, they picture someone with a high-powered hose blasting water at a surface. The reality is quite different. Professional exterior cleaning involves a range of specialised equipment, each suited to specific surfaces, conditions and outcomes.

At Surface Co, we select our equipment based on the surface type, the level of contamination, and the result required. Using the wrong machine, or the wrong pressure, can cause permanent damage to pavers, timber, render, roof tiles and more. This guide explains the equipment we use, why we use it, and what pressure is appropriate for different surfaces across Sunshine Coast properties.

Why Equipment Choice Matters

The Sunshine Coast climate accelerates the growth of mould, algae, lichen and organic matter on exterior surfaces. High humidity, warm temperatures and regular rainfall create the perfect conditions for buildup. But not every surface can handle the same cleaning approach.

A concrete driveway and a terracotta roof tile are both affected by the same climate. But they require completely different equipment, pressure levels and technique. Getting this wrong can void warranties, crack surfaces, lift coatings, or spread the very organisms you are trying to remove.

Cold Water Pressure Washers

Cold water machines are the foundation of most residential and commercial pressure cleaning work. They use high-pressure water flow to physically dislodge dirt, grime, biological matter and staining from hard surfaces.

Best used for:

  • Concrete driveways and pathways
  • Brick and block paving
  • Pool surrounds
  • Kerbs and guttering surrounds
  • Commercial hard surfaces

Typical PSI range: 2,500 to 4,000 PSI for concrete and hard surfaces

Cold water machines are highly effective on concrete and paving where surface hardness allows for higher pressure without damage. The key is controlling dwell time and angle of attack to avoid surface etching or joint erosion.

Hot Water Pressure Washers

Hot water machines introduce heated water, typically between 60°C and 155°C, into the cleaning process. Heat breaks down oils, grease and organic matter far more effectively than cold water alone, and reduces the reliance on chemical treatments.

At Surface Co, we use hot water equipment for jobs where cold water simply will not cut it.

Best used for:

  • Oil and grease stains on driveways and workshop floors
  • Commercial kitchen surrounds and loading docks
  • Heavy organic buildup on commercial surfaces
  • Heavily contaminated pool areas
  • Any surface where degreasing is required

Typical PSI range: 1,500 to 3,500 PSI depending on surface

Hot water cleaning is particularly effective on the Sunshine Coast where cooking oil, vehicle grease and food residue accumulate on commercial surfaces in humid conditions. The heat accelerates cleaning time and improves results significantly over cold water on these types of contamination.

Soft Wash Systems

Soft washing is a low-pressure application method that relies on specialist cleaning solutions, rather than brute force, to kill and remove biological matter such as mould, algae, lichen, moss and mildew.

At Surface Co, our soft wash setup runs off our standard machine using a downstream chemical injection system, which allows us to switch between high-pressure rinsing and low-pressure chemical application on the same rig.

Best used for:

  • Roof cleaning (tiles, metal, Colorbond)
  • House washing (render, weatherboard, Hardie board, painted surfaces)
  • Timber decks and fences
  • Solar panels
  • Surfaces where high pressure would cause damage

Typical PSI range: 100 to 500 PSI during chemical application, with a low-pressure rinse

This is the correct method for roofs and rendered walls on the Sunshine Coast. High pressure on roof tiles can crack surfaces, strip granules from Colorbond, and force water under tiles, potentially causing internal water damage. Soft washing kills the organism at the root rather than just blasting off visible growth, which means results last significantly longer.

Rotary Surface Cleaners

A rotary surface cleaner, often called a flat surface cleaner, is a disc-shaped attachment that connects to the pressure washer wand. It contains two or more spinning jets enclosed within a housing that sits flat against the surface being cleaned.

Best used for:

  • Large concrete driveways
  • Pathways and footpaths
  • Car parks and commercial hardstand areas
  • Pool surrounds

Without a surface cleaner, cleaning large flat areas with a single lance creates uneven striping. Visible lines where the jet has overlapped inconsistently. A rotary surface cleaner delivers even, consistent pressure across the full cleaning path and dramatically speeds up the process on large areas.

Typical PSI: Matched to the parent machine, usually 2,500 to 4,000 PSI

Turbo Nozzles

A turbo nozzle, also called a rotary nozzle, is a lance attachment that spins a concentrated zero-degree jet in a rapid circular motion, creating the impact of a pencil jet with the coverage of a 25-degree spray.

Best used for:

  • Stubborn staining on concrete
  • Heavily soiled paving
  • Spot cleaning on hard surfaces
  • Removing embedded biological matter from textured concrete

Typical PSI: 2,500 to 4,000 PSI

Turbo nozzles are powerful and should only be used on hard, dense surfaces. They are not appropriate for timber, render, painted surfaces or roof tiles.

Telescopic Wands and Extension Poles

Telescopic wands allow operators to reach elevated surfaces without ladders, improving both safety and access. They extend the cleaning reach from ground level to second-storey heights and beyond.

Best used for:

  • House washing under eaves and upper-storey cladding
  • Solar panel cleaning
  • Gutter exteriors
  • Fascia and soffit boards

Working from ground level with extended reach eliminates roof access risk on certain job types, reduces setup time and allows for consistent angle control during soft wash application on cladding and solar panels.

Downstream Chemical Injection

Downstream injection is the method we use to introduce cleaning solutions into the water stream after the pump, allowing us to apply low-pressure chemical treatments without modifying the machine itself.

This is how our soft wash capability is integrated into our standard pressure washing rig.

How it works: at low pressure, the injector draws chemical solution into the water flow. When the operator switches to a high-pressure nozzle, the injector bypasses and delivers clean rinse water. This gives us the flexibility to treat surfaces chemically and then rinse at appropriate pressure in a single pass, without swapping equipment.

Choosing the Right Pressure for Each Surface

This is one of the most important decisions in professional exterior cleaning. Too much pressure causes damage. Too little pressure delivers a poor result. Here is a general guide to the PSI ranges we work within at Surface Co:

Surface Recommended PSI Method
Concrete driveways and paths 2,500 to 4,000 PSI Cold or hot water, surface cleaner
Brick and block paving 1,500 to 2,500 PSI Cold water, surface cleaner or fan nozzle
Roof tiles (terracotta/concrete) 100 to 500 PSI Soft wash, low-pressure rinse
Metal and Colorbond roofing 100 to 300 PSI Soft wash only
Rendered and painted walls 100 to 600 PSI Soft wash, fan nozzle
Timber decking and fences 500 to 1,200 PSI Low pressure, wide fan nozzle
Solar panels 100 to 400 PSI Soft wash or gentle cold water
Pool surrounds 1,500 to 3,000 PSI Cold water, surface cleaner or fan nozzle
Commercial concrete 3,000 to 4,000 PSI Hot or cold water, surface cleaner
Weatherboard and cladding 100 to 600 PSI Soft wash, telescopic wand

How Surface Co Selects Equipment for Each Job

Before we start any job, we assess the surface type, the level and type of contamination, and the outcome required. This determines which equipment and pressure settings we use.

A driveway with oil staining gets a hot water machine and a targeted pre-treatment. A tiled roof gets our soft wash setup with an appropriate biocide solution and a low-pressure rinse. A large commercial car park gets our rotary surface cleaner for speed and consistency.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to exterior cleaning. The equipment is only as effective as the knowledge behind how it is used.
